SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Blythewood quarterback Richard Mounce picked up his second award in little more than a week.

Mounce, named South Carolina's "Mr. Football" as the state's top performer, was named the offensive MVP on Saturday after leading South Carolina to a 31-24 victory over North Carolina in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas.

Mounce, who plans to attend Clemson on a baseball scholarship, completed 9 of 18 passes for 249 yards, including a 42-yard touchdown pass to Jaron Brown of Cheraw. Five of Mounce's passes went for 30 yards or more.

Mounce ended his high school football career the best way he could. During the summer, defending Class 3-A champion Blythewood was banned from the state playoffs because of rules violations.

"It's been great. It's been a great two weeks, getting those awards," Mounce said. "I had a lot of fun up here. The coaches are great. The players are great, and it was a great game. I don't think we could have had a better group of receivers out there. I had fun working with them."

South Carolina trailed 14-10 after West Iredell's Bobby Morrison Jr. scored on a 5-yard run.

Mounce's TD pass to Brown regained the lead and Orangeburg-Wilkinson linebacker Sterling Lucas recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Four plays later, South Carolina scored again to take a 10-point lead.

North Carolina got it back within a touchdown, 24-17, on a 34-yard field goal by Casey Barth of Wilmington Hoggard with 12:49 to go.

But Blue Ridge running back J.J. Booker had a 31-yard TD run five minutes later that put South Carolina back in control.

Morrison was North Carolina's MVP with 51 yards rushing. Justin Venable of Southeast Guilford was the defensive MVP for the Tar Heels after making five tackles.
