Pride outlasts Wildcats

Wilson's fourth-quarter TD run is the difference, keeping Leesville Road perfect

RALEIGH - The matchup of teams unbeaten in the Cap Seven 4-A was every bit what was expected.

When the dust settled, Leesville Road emerged triumphant and still undefeated with a 38-35 victory over host Millbrook.

"What a great high school football game. What more could you want?" asked Pride coach David Green, whose team is 10-0 overall and 5-0 in the conference.

To answer, how about a game with explosive scoring? Six minutes into the first quarter, Millbrook led 14-13.

"I thought we were going to need 60 points to win," Green said.

The Pride didn't need quite that many. In the end, Leesville quarterback Thomas Wilson's 4-yard touchdown run with 9:03 left proved to be the difference against the Wildcats (7-2, 3-1).

On the game's second play, Leesville Road's Cody Lyon scooped up a fumble and ran 27-yards for a touchdown. Millbrook's Jamal Williams returned the ensuing kick 99 yards for a touchdown to tie the score at 7-7.

Wilson only needed six plays to go 76 yards and retake the lead for Leesville on a 9-yard pass to Taylor Gentry. The missed extra-point attempt made it 13-7.

Millbrook returned the favor, going 75 yards and taking a 14-13 lead on a 22-yard touchdown run by Kuwon Eldridge.

How about talented offensive players? Had that too. Wilson was only getting warmed up. The senior had 197 yards passing in the first quarter. He finished with 359 for the game. He also threw four touchdowns and ran for another. He distributed the ball to seven receivers, keeping the Millbrook defense guessing.

"They have a great quarterback-receiver combination," Millbrook coach Clarence Inscore said.

On the other side of the field is Millbrook's Williams. He has the speed to run through a puddle without getting wet, and he can change directions faster than a politician.

Williams rushed for 218 yards and one touchdown in addition to his kickoff return.

"I didn't think we were as aggressive as we could be, but we wanted to contain Jamal, but you saw what he can do," Green said.

Do you want back-and-forth scoring? The lead changed six times throughout. Wilson guided the Pride to a 25-14 lead with a pair of 26-yard TD passes bookending the first-quarter break.

But QB Brian Kass was up to the task for Millbrook, running for two touchdowns for a 28-25 halftime lead.

The teams exchanged touchdowns again in the third quarter, leaving Millbrook ahead 35-31. Then Wilson ran the ball in for his fifth touchdown, and the Pride grabbed its 38-35 lead.

That left a nail-biting ending. Both defenses played solid in the fourth. Millbrook stopped Leesville on fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line. Then the teams held each other to three-and-outs. It came down to Wilson dropping a beautiful punt at the Millbrook 1-yard line with 46 seconds left.

Despite the distance Millbrook had to go, Green still didn't feel it was far enough.

"The ball out in the middle of Spring Forest Road isn't far enough," he said.

Millbrook tried everything with double-passes and hook-and-ladders to get it to the Leesville 41 with five seconds left. Kass' Hail Mary to Williams on the last play failed, but pass interference on the defense gave Millbrook the ball at the Leesville 26 and one last chance. However, David Brown's 43-yard, field-goal try fell short, keeping the Pride undefeated in the Cap Seven.

"This type of game, it's a shame both teams couldn't win," Green said.
