RALEIGH - Wakefield brought a balanced attack and swarming defense to remain undefeated.

Katie Slay led Wakefield with 12 points in a 60-29 victory over Leesville Road in Cap Seven girls basketball on Friday.

"We wanted to set a tone early and play good defense," Wolverines coach Danielle Blackburn said. "With our pressure we were hoping to create some turnovers and hit some baskets in transition. I think we were able to do that."

Slay, at 6 feet 5, is Wakefield's tallest player, but she hasn't been consistent offensively until recently, Blackburn said.

"I think it's really about my team," Slay said. "They've been pushing me in practice. ... Once you feel good and comfortable, you really want to step up and help your team."

Wakefield had 14 turnovers, while Leesville Road committed 15 of its 23 in the first half.

"We like to put pressure from the beginning," Slay said.

While posting 30 points in the first half, the Wolverines' stingy defense just about blanked the Pride in the first four minutes of each of the first two quarters.

Wakefield (14-0, 3-0 Cap Seven) had little trouble driving to the basket and hitting shots from the perimeter.

"Wakefield deserves all the accolades they get," Leesville Road coach Jay Poole said. "Nice size inside. Great shooting outside. Add good coaching to it and it's just a tough combination."

It didn't help that the Pride (10-4, 1-2) played without Whitney Long, who is the area's leading scorer at 21.8 points per game.

The Pride's second best scorer, Jordan McAdams (averaging 14.9 points), didn't enter the game until the second half. She scored six points.

Poole declined to comment on the two girls' playing time.

Leesville Road's Elizabeth Fairman had a game-high 13 points.

Behind Slay, Kristen Hanzer scored 10 points, Sarah Wollett had nine, and Kaila'Shea Menendez and Kelsey Evans each added eight points for Wakefield.

"This team is pretty level-headed," Blackburn said about the pressure of being undefeated. "We try to keep them grounded. ... We've not played our best yet. We're trying to get better with each game."
