CARY -
As he walked out to the mat Thursday night, Cary 119-pounder Cordale Risk had choreographed the match in his head.
Only a few seconds passed before his plan materialized.
Risk scored a quick takedown and then pinned Green Hope's Matt Gardner in 53 seconds. Risk's win clinched the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A East Regional dual-team championship for the Imps, 39-28.
"Everything just went as planned," Risk said.
Cary won the first five matches to jump out to a 21-0 lead.
Matt Colvard (135) and Justin Koren (140) opened the match with back-to-back major decisions. Brendon Parker-Risk followed with a 14-11 decision at 145, Gabe Brotzman earned a 12-4 major decision at 152, and Josh Cobb pinned Phillippe Wouters in 25 seconds at 160.
Green Hope won the next three matches -- Miles Shaw's decision at 171, Scott LaChapelle's pin at 189 and Preston Mitchum's major decision at 215 -- to close the gap to 21-13.
But Cary answered with two pins -- Eloheim Palma at heavyweight and Ben Creed at 103.
Green Hope's Chris Godfrey gave the Falcons a glimmer of hope after a 6-5 win at 112, but Risk quickly put an end to the match with his pin at 119.
The regional title is Cary's eighth in a row as it seeks its second straight dual-team title and third in four years. The Imps travel to Mocksville on Saturday to take on Davie County, which beat the Imps in the 2006 final.
"All you can hope for is you've got all your guys in the lineup, [and] they're healthy and wrestling well, and that's what we've got," Cary coach Jerry Winterton said.
CARY 42, RIVERSIDE 32: Despite the final score, Cary had its way with Durham Riverside in the semifinals.
The Imps won the first six matches and opened up a 30-0 lead. Riverside won the next two, but Cary clinched the victory with pins at 215 and heavyweight. Up 42-8, Cary forfeited the final four weight classes.
GREEN HOPE 35, CHAPEL HILL 28: The Falcons earned their first appearance in the regional final after squeaking by Chapel Hill.
Chapel Hill took a 16-13 lead after John Leonard's pin at 160, but Green Hope's Shaw answered with a pin of his own at 171 to give the Falcons a 19-16 lead. They never trailed again.
"I told the guys yesterday, just go for it," Green Hope coach Chip Bunn said.
"I thought we were going to have a hard time with Chapel Hill, and we did. And I told them for Cary, don't worry about the scoreboard. Don't worry about anything. ..."
