Jonathan Burns of Cardinal Gibbons capped an excellent career by being named the most outstanding wrestler in the N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A/2-A championships on Saturday in Winston-Salem.

Burns pinned Shawn Spring of West Davidson in the 145-pound final in 43 seconds. The victory was his fourth by pin in as many trips to the mat in the state championships.

Burns was 56-6 as a freshman at Cary High.

He sat out his sophomore year after transferring to Gibbons. Students transferring from a public school to an NCHSAA private school must sit out one year.

Burns was 65-0 as a junior and finished this season 61-0. He has won his last 128 matches.

"I really enjoyed the season," Burns said. "I have worked really hard and thought I deserved it."

Burns is committed to the University of Nebraska, where he plans to wrestle.

DUKE LANDS FORWARD: Duke received a commitment from Asheville Christ School's 6-foot-11 junior Mason Plumlee on Wednesday, days after he led the 34-2 team to the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3-A boys basketball title.

He was considering Georgetown, Notre Dame, Michigan, Iowa and Stanford before Duke started recruiting him in January.

NCISAA ALL-STATE: Several area players joined Mason Plumlee on the NCISAA all-state team.

Word of God, the boys 1-A champ, landed Jonathan Wall and C.J. Leslie. Ravenscroft's Ryan Kelly was chosen in 3-A.

Ravenscroft's Erin Bratcher and Lindsey Cowher were on the 3-A girls team. Durham Cresset's Danielle Devlin was a 1-A selection, and Katelyn Bass of St. David's made the 2-A team.
