RALEIGH -- Zach Boychuk, the Carolina Hurricanes' first-round draft choice this year, said he is close to signing an entry-level contract with the team.
"Hopefully, we can get something done in the next day or two," the forward said Friday.
General manager Jim Rutherford said the Canes had made a final contract offer to Boychuk, adding, "We think it's a good one and are hoping he accepts it."
The Canes are expected to make an announcement today.
Rutherford would not discuss terms, but the contract is believed to match the one given to forward Brandon Sutter, the Canes' first-round draft pick in 2007.
Sutter signed a three-year deal that will pay him $787,500 per season at the NHL level or $65,000 per season at the minor league level. Sutter received a $262,500 signing bonus.
Boychuk, who starred for the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the Western Hockey League last season, had surgery on his left wrist in July. He had a pin removed from the wrist this week and hopes to rejoin practice soon.
