Jose Fernandez tripled and singled as the Carolina Mudcats defeated the Salem Red Sox 5-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday.
Carolina started the scoring in the second when it crossed the plate for three runs, including a double by Tanner Murphy that scored Fernandez.
The Mudcats later tacked on two runs in the fourth when Isaias Tejeda got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Fernandez hit an RBI single to secure the victory.
Salem missed an additional scoring opportunity in the sixth, when Danny Mars struck out with the bases loaded to end the inning.
Carolina right-hander Caleb Beech (2-2) picked up the win after allowing one run on six hits over 5 2/3 innings. Opposing starter Trey Ball (5-4) took the loss in the Carolina League game after a rough outing in which he allowed five runs and three hits over three innings.
