• Charlotte Hornets coach Steve Clifford made sure to check in with shooting guard Lance Stephenson after choosing not to play him in the fourth quarter of a two-point loss Saturday to the Memphis Grizzlies.
“We had a good talk today,” Clifford said before Sunday’s game. “He knows where he’s at.”
Never miss a local story.
• Since Stephenson is from New York City, the local writers peppered Clifford with questions about the signing. At one point, Clifford reiterated something he’s been saying since July – that while Stephenson has big-time potential he’s far from a finished product.
“He’s 23 years old,” Clifford said, “and developing into a good player.”
• When center Al Jefferson finished the Memphis game with six rebounds, it broke a string of 10 games (stretching back to last season) when Jefferson finished with a double-double.
• Last season the Hornets were consistently bottom-10 in every significant offensive category, but best in the league in defensive-rebound percentage. This season (and yes that’s a two-game sample headed into Sunday’s game), they were still bottom-10 in all those offensive categories, but No. 1 in defensive-rebound percentage.
