On Wednesday, Clemson’s K.J. McDaniels tried to show what he does best would benefit an NBA team.
Meanwhile Andre Dawkins looked to demonstrate skills beyond what he displayed with Duke.
McDaniels and Dawkins were among a half-dozen draft prospects who worked out for the Charlotte Hornets. McDaniels is a 6-foot-6 small forward who shined on defense for the Tigers. Dawkins is a 6-5 shooting guard who was a 3-point specialist for the Blue Devils.
“I feel like it translates a lot,” McDaniels said of his defensive prowess. “I’ll bring a defensive intensity. I can be a solid offensive player but mostly I’m a defensive-minded player.”
McDaniels upped his scoring dramatically this past season. As a junior he averaged 17.1 points after averaging 3.9 points and 10.9 points, respectively, during his first two seasons.
Dawkins shot 40 percent from the college 3-point line over his four seasons. But he said following his workout he’s more than just a long-range shooter.
“Shooting ability, athletic ability, show a few things I wasn’t able to show at Duke,” Dawkins said of his approach.
What didn’t he display with the Blue Devils?
“Some stuff off the dribble, getting to the basket, mid-range” shooting, Dawkins said. “It’s a different system at Duke; I was mainly shooting 3s there.”
Hugo’s return: The Hornets officially bring back Hugo as their mascot early Thursday morning when he’ll make a 7:30 a.m. rooftop appearance at Time Warner Cable Arena.
The teal-and-purple bug will make several appearances around Charlotte on Thursday, including a Hornets “tweet-up” at just past noon on the corner of Trade and Tryon.
