The Canes announced Friday they have signed defenseman Brett Bellemore to a one-year, two-way contract.

The deal will pay Bellemore $600,000 on the NHL level, or $175,000 at the American Hockey League (AHL) level in 2014-15.

"I like the fact that he battles and he competes," Canes general manager Ron Francis said. "We've talked about some areas to improve on over the summer and I'm sure he's worked on those, and will be ready to come in here and prove himself in September and vie for a spot.”

Bellemore, 26, had two goals and six assists in 64 games with the Canes in 2013-14, his first full NHL season. He was second on the team and second among NHL rookie defensemen with 169 hits, and his 45 penalty minutes tied for second among Carolina skaters.

Bellemore, who was an unrestricted free agent, has played in 72 career NHL games with the Hurricanes.
