Avs @ Canes

The Carolina Hurricanes are hosting the Colorado Avalanche at PNC Arena.

Pat Dwyer and Jordan Staal have scored as the Canes lead 2-1 after two periods.

Staal scored his third of the season at 12:47 of the first after strong forechecking by Pat Dwyer, who fought for the puck behind the net. Dwyer got the puck out and Nathan Gerbe got off a shot that Avs goalie Semyon Varlamov stopped, only to have Staal follow up and bury the rebound.

Dwyer then made it 2-0 just 26 seconds into the second period. Staal forced a turnover in the neutral zone and Gerbe made a nice pass to Dwyer crashing the net for Dwyer’s first of the season.

The Avs used the game’s first power play to score and build momentum. After Radek Dvorak was called for hooking, the Avs struck as Paul Stastny knocked in a loose puck after a Nathan MacKinnon shot got past goalie Justin Peters and the puck settled near the post.

The Avs had a second power play late in the period but the Canes killed it off to keep the lead. Peters robbed MacKinnon with a glove save with a second left in the power play.

The Avs came into the game with 182 first-period shots but put just five on net in the first in being outshot 11-5. Peters, making his eighth straight start in net for the Canes, made a nice pad save on a shot by PA Parenteau six minutes into the game, then made another save on a Stastny shot late in the opening period.

The puck was loose in the crease after Stastny's shot, but Eric Staa outfought Gabriel Landeskog to clear it.

Scoring first had been a big part of the Avs' 14-2-0 start this season, the best in franchise history. Colorado had scored first in 12 games and won them all.

The Avs nearly scored in the opening seconds of the game as Ryan O'Reilly drove the net, the puck bouncing off the right post and behind Peters.
