The Canes announced Wednesday that the team will assign rookie forward Elias Lindholm to Sweden’s World Junior Championship team.

Lindholm, 19, played for Sweden a year ago in the World Juniors in Ufa, Russia, helping the Swedes take the silver medal. He was the Canes’ first-round draft pick, No. 5 overall, in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

Lindholm has three goals and four assists in 21 games with the Hurricanes.

The 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship will be held in Malmo, Sweden, from Dec. 26, 2013 to Jan. 5, 2014.
