Murphy reassigned to Checkers

The Carolina Hurricanes on Friday assigned defenseman Ryan Murphy to the Charlotte Checkers (AHL).

By being reassigned Friday, Murphy will be eligible to play for the Checkers during the NHL's break for the 2014 Winter Olympics, which begin next month.

Murphy, 20, has two goals and nine assists in 39 NHL games with Carolina this season and has been a healthy scratch in recent games.
