The Canes on Thursday recalled defenseman Ryan Murphy from the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL.

Murphy, 20, had one goal and 17 assists in 16 AHL games being assigned to Charlotte on Jan. 24. He leads Charlotte defensemen in assists and was on an 11-game assist streak at the time of his recall, the longest by an AHL player since the 2011-12 season and longest by an AHL defenseman since 2008-09.

Murphy has two goals and nine assists in 39 NHL games with Carolina this season and is in his first full professional season.

The Canes are down a defenseman with Justin Faulk sidelined with an upper-body injury suffered on the recent road trip.
