Area fishing report

Where the fish are biting in local fresh and saltwater areas.

Saltwater

Oregon Inlet

High winds and rough seas have kept offshore fishers at bay. Inshore, lots of nice size drum are being caught, along with sea mullet, pin fish and pig fish. Contact: Oregon Inlet Fishing Center 252-441-6301, www.oregon-inlet.com.

Buxton/Hatteras

Rough winds have kept fishermen on the sidelines. When the conditions are right, good sized dolphin and wahoo have been biting offshore, along with some blue marlin and sailfish. Ocracoke/Portsmouth

Cape Lookout/Bogue Inlet

Redfish and trout are being caught in the Core, Back and Bouge Sounds. Spooks and top dog baits have been successful. Flounder, trout and red drum are also being hooked with cut bait. Bluefish are biting in the inlet. Contact: EJW Outdoors 252-247-4725; Portside Marina 252-726-7678; www.ncoif.com.

Topsail Island

Blues, Spanish mackerel, sea mullets and drum are biting near the piers and in the surf. On the sound side, sheepshead and flounder can be found. Contact: East Coast Discount Tackle 910-328-1887, www.eastcoastsports.com.

Wilmington/ Wrightsville Beach

Inshore and around the inlet, flounder and speckled trout are biting. Live bait has been effective. In the surf, red drum, bluefish and Spanish mackerel are being hooked. Contact: Tex’s Tackle 910-791-1763, www.texstackle.com.

Southport/Sunset Beach

Storms have made for inconsistent fishing during the week, but plenty of Spanish mackerel are still biting, along with some sharks. Contact: Dutchman Creek Bait & Tackle 910-457-1221; www.yeahrightcharters.com; or www.oifishingcenter.com.

Freshwater

Falls Lake

Bass are biting around 10-15 feet and are being hooked Carolina rigs. White bass and crappie can be found around 8-10 feet and have been biting live minnows and eels, while catfish are being caught near the bottom. Jordan Lake

Bass and crappie are biting at 10-14 feet with soft plastics and spinner bait. Catfish are biting near the bottom and are being caught with worms and shrimp. Water level: normal 216, Wednesday 216.90, full pool 240. Contact: Wilsonville General Store 919-362-7101; Crosswinds Marina 919-362-5391.

Kerr Lake

Catfish and stripers are being caught in the creeks, while crappie can be found in depths of 15-24 feet. Water level: normal 300, Wednesday 301.18, full pool 320. Contact: Bobcat’s Bait & Tackle 434-374-8381; www.kerrlake.com.

Lake Wheeler

Shearon Harris Lake

Bass are biting anywhere from the bank to 20 feet and are being caught with crank bait .Crappie can be hooked around 10-20 feet and are biting minnows. Contact: The Tackle Box 919-557-8255; www.wmi.org.
