A strong and consistent Spanish mackerel and bluefish bite continues to surge near the point and near Shelly Island. Cape Lookout/Bogue Inlet
Fishing remains slow due to turbulent waters. The backwater bite is still still the strongest and most consistent available and consists of mostly black drum and bluefish, while the surf is still producing very few Spanish mackerel and bluefish. Pompano and sea mullet have been hardly biting at all and are nibbling at bait in the evening. The offshore bite is almost non-existent, but a few king mackerel have caught the hook as well. The Gulf Stream is still producing grouper and mahi bites, along with some blackfin tuna. Contact: EJW Outdoors 252-247-4725; Portside Marina 252-726-7678; www.ncoif.com.
The pier and surf bite is still very inconsistent. Only a few bluefish and black drum bites have been reported during the day, and only a handful of sea mullet bites at night. Inshore fishing remains light, with a few speckled trout and drum biting on minnows and small pinfish. Trips offshore and to the Gulf Stream are few and far between, but a few catches of sea bass, king mackerel, grouper and mahi are still being reported from those making the trip. Fishing is still slow for the majority of the lake. The few bass that have been caught were still in 10-15 feet of water, and bit on soft plastic Carolina rigs. The crappie have been the most consistent bite in the lake and are near brush piles biting on minnows. The catfish have been slow, with only a pair of fish coming up from about 15-20 down on cut bait. The white bass have trickled off, but are still forming small schools in the mornings near the creeks. Water level: 251.28, normal 251.5, full pool 264.8.
