Future cadet ready to serve his country
At home Sunday after church, Southern Durham senior Pierre Banks, who will attend the Air Force Academy, flicked on the TV and learned about a man he now considers an American hero. Before the newscast, Banks didn't know much about Pat Tillman, a former Arizona Cardinals player who gave up a multimillion- dollar NFL contract to become a U.S. Army Ranger. Tillman, 27, died in Afghanistan fighting for what he believed.
Thinking, but not talking state title
It has been said that for a team to win a state track-and-field championship, the planets must be perfectly aligned. Dogs must dance a tango in Buenos Aires. And money must grow on trees. Or something like that.
Doing her own hurdling research
The research paper is titled "Perfecting the 300 Hurdles." The author is Durham Hillside senior Michelle Duffey. She wrote the eight-page paper for an English class two months ago. Hillside coach Bob Hill now carries it in his briefcase and plans to hand out copies to other runners next season.
Leesville golfer observes the best
Leesville Road senior Brian Fitch spent part of his spring break studying world-class golfers at the Masters on Saturday.
Baseball team home-schooled
Brooks Stephenson couldn't fathom high school without the opportunity to play baseball. A home-schooled student since the sixth grade, he considered enrolling in private school when he entered ninth grade two years ago just to have a chance to play.
