Bouncing through the brackets:

Wake Forest-Rolesville's 21-14 victory over Leesville Road last week came during a great night for high school football.

The crowd was huge and the stakes high as two undefeated teams played in the regular-season finale.

The teams could play again next week with higher stakes.

If Wake Forest-Rolesville beats Cary and Leesville Road beats Southeast Raleigh on Friday, then Leesville Road will play at Wake Forest-Rolesville in the N.C. High School Athletic Association's 4-AA second round.

The two teams met in the second round last season.

ANOTHER BIG ONE: If Charlotte Independence beats Greensboro Page and Charlotte Butler tops Lumberton, Independence would play at Butler in the second round.

Last week, Butler became the first North Carolina team in years to beat Independence, 21-20.

GARNER ON TOP: Garner, No. 1 in The N&O rankings, got a favorable spot on the 4-AA bracket.

The Trojans (11-0) won a drawing with Hope Mills South View (11-0) and Wake Forest-Rolesville (11-0) for the top seed. Garner will play its games at home throughout the playoffs until the final.

Garner's bracket position means the Trojans would not face No. 2 seed South View, No. 3 Wake Forest-Rolesville, No. 6 Fayetteville Britt or No. 7 Leesville Road until the Eastern finals.

Garner will open with Durham Jordan.

HOMECOMING: Long-time New Bern coach Chip Williams might be taking his Wakefield team back to his old school.

Wakefield would play at New Bern if the Wolverines beat Athens Drive and New Bern tops Sanderson in the first round.

GREAT PREDICTION: Wake Forest-Rolesville coach Earl Smith said on Aug. 31 after his Cougars had beaten Southern Durham 10-0 that Southern had a great team.

Smith said that if the Southern players continued to believe in coach Adrian Jones that the Spartans would have a great season.

Southern, 0-3 at the time, finished 7-4 and is the top seed from the PAC-Six 4-A.

The Spartans will play Wilmington Laney in the first round of the 4-A playoffs.

TOUGH SEEDING: Fuquay-Varina finished 10-1 and shared the regular-season title in the Tri-Eight, but it enters the playoffs as the No. 7 seed and the third seed from the league.

The Bengals will open the playoffs against Fayetteville Seventy-First, which recently handed perennial power Richmond County its only loss, 13-6.

Fuquay-Varina was third in a drawing with Athens Drive and Middle Creek.

DEFENDING CHAMP: Greenville Rose, the 2006 4-A champion, is 7-4 and has a tough road ahead after being seeded No. 5 in 4-A.

The Rampants will play Fayetteville Cape Fear in the first round and might go against Durham Hillside in the second round.

WEBB'S NO. 1: Oxford Webb (8-3) is the surprising top 3-AA seed in the East. Webb, Eastern Alamance and South Granville each finished 4-1 in the Mid-State 3-A.

Eastern Alamance and South Granville are playing in the 3-A bracket. Granville (8-3) is the No. 11 seed in the 3-A East.

LOUISBURG WINS DRAW: Louisburg (10-1) is the No. 1 seed in 1-AA, even though Warsaw Kenan finished 11-0.

Teams are seeded on the basis of 10 games, so both were seeded as 10-0 conference champions. Louisburg won the drawing.
