Six Atlantic Coast Conference men's basketball recruiting classes are ranked among the top 25 in the country by the Scout.com recruiting service.

Wake Forest's class is ranked No. 4 in the country, followed in the ACC by North Carolina (No. 6), Florida State (13), Duke (18), Maryland (19) and Clemson (25).

Florida State made a significant move up by signing Chris Singleton, a 6-foot-8 power forward at Dunwoody (Ga.) High. Scout.com ranks him No. 27 in the nation.

Singleton chose the Seminoles over Kentucky.

The rankings could, and probably will, change. Although almost all of the players on Scout.com's top 100 list will sign during the early period that began Wednesday, teams will have another opportunity to add players during the spring signing period.

PACK RECRUIT INJURED: Terrell Manning of Scotland County, one of N.C. State's top football recruits, injured a knee during a 28-18 loss to East Burke and probably will have surgery.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound linebacker torn his medial collateral ligament and may have a tear in his anterior cruciate ligament. He is expected to recover fully.

SWIMMERS SIGN: Kirsten Smith, a six-time individual state high school swimming champion for Athens Drive, has signed with Florida.

Smith was The N&O girls swimmer of the year in 2007. She has been the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A girls championship most valuable swimmer for the past three seasons.

She has won the 200-yard individual medley and the 500 freestyle in each of the past three years.

She swims year-round with the Marlins of Raleigh club team and has qualified for the U.S. Olympic trials in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke and the 200- and 400-meter individual medleys. She was the captain of the U.S. junior national team this past spring.

Avery Pittman of Enloe, another MOR swimmer, has committed to Vermont. She was a state finalist in the 200 freestyle last spring.

MOR'S Erika Stewart -- who attends Durham Jordan but does not swim for the Falcons -- signed with Virginia. She is nationally ranked in the 100-meter backstroke.

ECU LANDS PAIR: Corey Thompson, a hard-hitting third baseman for Apex, and Lance Honeycutt, an outfielder/pitcher at Erwin Triton, have signed to play baseball at East Carolina.

During 2007, Thompson hit .471 with six home runs and 34 RBIs.

Honeycutt was 6-2 as a pitcher in 2007 with a 1.42 earned-run average and 112 strikeouts.

MYERS TO VMI: Steele Myers, a projected four-year starter at shortstop at Durham Jordan, plans to sign with Virginia Military on Monday.

Myers hit .556 with six home runs and 26 RBIs in Piedmont Athletic 4-A games during 2007.

"He emerged as a leader for us," Jordan coach Devy Bell said. "He handled pressure situations extremely well and was huge in our biggest games."

RAVENS SIGN: Ravenscroft basketball player Anya Knower and swimmer Candace Cooper signed national letters of intent last week.

Knower, a 6-2 center, averaged 9.8 points per game during the 2006-07 season and signed with Appalachian State.

Cooper won 2007 N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 3-A titles in the 200 individual medley and the 100 freestyle. She signed with North Carolina.

SHEPHERD TO JMU: Kanita Shepherd, a 6-2 center at Garner, signed to play basketball at James Madison. She has a 4.5 grade-point average and also was recruited by Clemson, East Carolina, Virginia Commonwealth and Virginia Tech.

ORANGE PLAYERS SIGN: Orange High baseball players Carvell Copeland and Marquis Riley signed with N.C. A&T.

Copeland, a center fielder, hit .317 last season with 10 steals, one home run and 21 runs scored.

Riley, a middle infielder, hit .375 with seven doubles, one home run and 25 RBIs. He also made the all-state team.
