College notes: Pack women rebound

Soccer team ends two-game skid

Chantalle Dugas scored in the 53rd minute to give the N.C. State women's soccer team a two-goal advantage and the Wolfpack went on to defeat North Florida 3-2 Wednesday afternoon at N.C. State Soccer Stadium.

The Wolfpack (8-2) snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 7-0 at home.

MEREDITH 4, N.C. WESLEYAN 3: Maggie Hart and Alex Calvert scored two goals apiece to lift the host Avenging Angels (6-2, 1-0 USA South) past N.C. Wesleyan (2-4, 0-1).

MEN'S SOCCER

WAKE FOREST 1, APPALACHIAN STATE 0: Luke Norman's goal in the 23rd minute gave No. 1 Wake Forest (7-0) past visiting Appalachian State (5-2).

UNC 2, ELON 1: Sheanon Williams' unassisted goal lifted No. 15 North Carolina (6-1-1) over visiting Elon (2-5-1). Brian Shriver also scored for the Heels.

HIGH POINT 2, N.C. STATE 1 (OT): Chris Scrum scored with 59 seconds left in overtime to lift the visiting Panthers (4-3-1) over the Wolfpack (1-5-1). Chrystel Bakong scored the Pack's goal.

FORMER CORNHUSKER FACES MURDER CHARGES: Former Nebraska running back Thunder Collins was arrested Wednesday, nearly 24 hours after a shooting left one person dead and another seriously wounded, police have confirmed.

Collins is in police custody and faces murder charges, Douglas County (Neb.) Attorney Don Kleine said.

Police also arrested Karnell Burton, 20, on suspicion of criminal homicide, attempted first-degree murder, and weapons charges. And an arrest warrant was issued for Ahmad Johnson, 21. Both Collins and Johnson face first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and felony weapons charges, Kleine said.

SOUTHERN CAL RECRUIT SENTENCED: A former high school football star and Southern California recruit has been sentenced to four years in prison for robbing a man at gunpoint.

The player, Maurice Leon Simmons, 18, and another man, Lamont Lee Hall, 20, were sentenced Wednesday for the March 5 holdup in Compton, Calif.
