Leafs D Komisarek to have surgery Wednesday

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Mike Komisarek is set to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery this upcoming Wednesday.

The team announced earlier that Komisarek would have surgery, but Thursday made the details known. Dr. James Andrews will perform the surgery in Birmingham, Alabama, and Komisarek is expected to have a recovery time of four to six months.

Komisarek, who was chosen to play for the United States in the upcoming Olympic Games, has been sidelined since January 2nd with the injury.

No. 1 Safina ousted from Rogers Cup

Dinara Safina is out of the Rogers Cup.

The No. 1-ranked Russian lost 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to Aravane Rezai of France in a second-round match Wednesday at the $2 million WTA Tour event in Toronto.

A day earlier, No. 3 seed Venus Williams was upset by Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko.

Claudio Lopez converted a penalty kick in the 92nd minute, and the Kansas City Wizards earned a 2-2 draw on Saturday at CommunityAmerica Ballpark to leave D.C. United's playoff hopes in doubt.

United overcame a first-half deficit on goals by Jaime Moreno and Julius James but Fred gave away the penalty in the closing seconds when he denied a scoring chance with a handball.

Lopez converted for his seventh goal of the season, and D.C. (9-8-13) settled for a tie that left it with 40 points for the season. The Colorado Rapids and Real Salt Lake also finished with 40 points, but FC Dallas and the New England Revolution can eliminate the trio with wins.

Sharapova survives Petrova

On a day of adieus at the French Open, Maria Sharapova managed to stick around in Paris.

Trailing through most of the third set in her toughest test since shoulder surgery, Sharapova pulled out a 6-2, 1-6, 8-6 victory over 11th-seeded Nadia Petrova on Wednesday to reach the third round at Roland Garros, her return to Grand Slam tennis.

"I kind of started stumbling away. Things went in the wrong direction," said Sharapova, who missed the U.S. Open and Australian Open. "I was just glad I could pick myself up and keep fighting."

United midfielder Szetela has successful surgery

Washington, D.C. (Sports Network) - D.C. United midfielder Danny Szetela had surgery on his right knee on Thursday night and is expected to miss six weeks, the Major League Soccer team announced.

"We're pleased with the results of Dannys surgery and are looking forward to his return to the field," United General Manager Dave Kasper said.

Szetela was acquired as an allocation in July of 2009, making four MLS appearances for United last season. He also played in five CONCACAF Champions League matches during the campaign, starting three times.
