Singletary's heroics send UVa past ODU

Sean Singletary scored six of his 22 points in a two-second span Monday night to give Virginia an 80-76 victory over visiting Old Dominion in the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational.

A 3-pointer by Singletary with six seconds left tied the score at 75-75. He then made a layup and free throw after a steal with four seconds left to give UVa (17-15) the lead for good at 78-75.

Old Dominion (18-16) had a chance with three seconds left after Jonathan Adams made a free throw to cut Virginia's lead to 78-76. But Adams turned the ball over, and Virginia's Calvin Baker hit two free throws to seal it.

Brian Henderson led Old Dominion with 26 points.

Virginia will host Bradley (19-15), which beat Ohio 79-73, in Wednesday's semifinals.

MORE MEN'S NIT

VIRGINIA TECH 75, UAB 49: A.D. Vassallo scored 18 points as host Virginia Tech came out strong and never let up, routing UAB in the second round of the NIT.

The Hokies (21-13) will play a quarterfinal game at home Wednesday against Mississippi.

Tech, up 36-21 at halftime, scored 23 points off 16 turnovers.

Reggie Huffman led UAB (23-11) with 10 points.

MISSISSIPPI 85, NEBRASKA 75: Zach Graham scored 10 of his 14 points in overtime, and host Mississippi beat Nebraska in the second round of the NIT.

Graham hit consecutive layups to make it 76-71, and the Rebels hit 7 of 9 free throws in the final 2 minutes to advance.

Chris Warren led Ole Miss (23-10) with 18 points. Aleks Maric had 18 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Cornhuskers (21-13).

OHIO STATE 73, CALIFORNIA 56: Jamar Butler scored 20 points and spurred a 17-2 first-half run with three 3-pointers to lead host Ohio State past California in an NIT second-round game.

Jerome Randle scored 18 points to lead Cal (17-16).

The Buckeyes (21-13) host Dayton in a quarterfinal Wednesday.

DAYTON 55, ILLINOIS STATE 48: Visiting Dayton went on a 17-0 second-half run to break open a close game and beat Illinois State in an NIT second-round game.

Brian Roberts led Dayton (23-10) with 16 points.

Dinma Odiakosa scored 14 points to lead the Redbirds (25-10), who went more than 10 minutes of the second half without scoring while missing 12 shots.

MEN'S GOLF

WOLFPACK'S HILL LEADS: N.C. State freshman Matt Hill fired a 4-under-par 67 to take the individual lead by one shot after two rounds of the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate at Awendaw, S.C.

Meanwhile, the Wolfpack improved nine strokes and jumped up five spots to second place, just one stroke behind South Carolina entering today's final round.
