California has turned to its biggest rival to find its new basketball coach, hiring former Stanford coach Mike Montgomery on Friday to replace the fired Ben Braun.
Montgomery was to be officially introduced at a news conference on campus today, the school said.
Montgomery, who spent 18 years with the Cardinal, has been out of coaching since August 2006 when he was let go after two seasons in the NBA with the Golden State Warriors. He has announced college games and been an assistant athletic director at Stanford while still collecting money from the final two years of his contract with Golden State.
Braun was fired last week after 12 seasons as coach when the Bears missed the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in five years.
Montgomery made the tournament his final 10 years at Stanford, winning at least one game each time. He has a career college coaching record of 547-244, including eight seasons at Montana.
NELSON NAMED MVP: Duke's DeMarcus Nelson scored 21 points to help the National team beat the American team 106-100 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-Star Game on Friday in San Antonio.
Nelson finished 6-for-12 from the field to go with five rebounds.
AP HONORS DAVIS: Keno Davis, who capped his first season as a head coach by leading Drake to its first NCAA appearance since 1971, was selected The Associated Press college basketball coach of the year Friday.
The 36-year-old Davis and his father, Tom, whom he succeeded at Drake, are the first father and son to win the national coach of the year award. Tom Davis was at Iowa when he won it in 1987.
Davis received 29 votes from the 72-member national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25. Bo Ryan, who led Wisconsin to the Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles, was second with 14. Bruce Pearl of Tennessee got six votes, and John Calipari of Memphis and Matt Painter of Purdue each had five.
TULSA WINS CBI TITLE: Ben Uzoh scored 17 points, and Tulsa rallied after a miserable start to beat Bradley 70-64 in Tulsa, Okla., and win the championship of the inaugural College Basketball Invitational tournament.
CREAN, INDIANA WORK OUT DEAL: Indiana is serious about keeping new basketball coach Tom Crean.
Under a preliminary deal between Crean and the university, Crean would owe $3 million if he resigns in the first three years of an eight-year contract. The amount lowers to $2 million in years four and five. It would be $1 million the last three years of the deal.
The contract is worth more than $18 million.
A final contract is expected to be signed by May 15.
LOYOLA MARYMOUNT HIRES BAYNO: Former UNLV basketball coach Bill Bayno took over the Loyola Marymount program Friday, leaving his position as an assistant with the Portland Trail Blazers.
The 46-year-old Bayno will be introduced Wednesday at a news conference on campus as the successor to Rodney Tention, who resigned March 12 after guiding the Lions to a 30-61 record over three seasons. Loyola went 5-26 last season, including a 2-12 mark in the West Coast Conference.
Bayno guided UNLV to a 95-65 record and two NCAA Tournament appearances as the Rebels' coach from 1995-2000.
