Coach Roy Williams said in an interview with the North Carolina athletic department's official Web site that wearing a Kansas sticker to support his former basketball team in Monday's NCAA championship game was nothing new.
Williams told TarHeelBlue.com in a postseason interview that he supported UNC after the Tar Heels beat his Kansas team in the 1993 Final Four.
He also discussed having preliminary meetings with Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington and Tyler Hansbrough, three players considering leaving UNC early.
A team spokesman has declined requests from The News & Observer to interview Williams about wearing the Kansas logo. Many Tar Heels fans have expressed concern about his quick show of support for Kansas -- just 48 hours after the Heels were beaten in the semifinals.
After the loss, Williams stayed in San Antonio to be with his son and watch the final game.
Williams told the UNC Web site that a former KU player, Ryan Robertson, gave him the Kansas sticker as he was walking down an aisle to his seat at the Alamodome. He put the sticker on his shirt after taking his seat. He later appeared on national TV and was interviewed at halftime on CBS, with viewers seeing him in a black shirt with the Kansas logo visible.
The story on TarHeelBlue.com said that in 1993 Williams had waved a blue-and-white pompom to support the Heels after they defeated the Jayhawks.
"My team lost to Carolina in 1993, and I stayed and supported Carolina," Williams said. "My team lost to Kansas in 2008, and I stayed and supported Kansas. I am who I am.
"I'm thankful that I am surrounded by people who understand how I am and support me no matter what, because I realize not everyone in the world falls into that category."
