Ingrid Wicker-McCree was named as athletics director at N.C. Central today.

Wicker-McCree had been interim athletics director for the past five months, succeeding Bill Hayes, who left NCCU to take the same post at Florida A&M.

Hayes and Wicker-McCree worked together to help push N.C. Central into Division I — the school is completing its first year of the process.

“Ingrid’s demonstrated record of leadership and achievement is a real asset to our team,” NCCU Chancellor Charlie Nelms said in statement. “Not only does she have a history of being a winning coach but she has provided excellent leadership during this transitional period.”

During 15 years at N.C. Central, Wicker-McCree led the school to four CIAA titles in softball and volleyball and led the athletic department's internal workings, including compliance and eligibility.

“I am truly honored by this appointment,” Wicker-McCree said in a statement. “Maintaining NCCU’s rich history of academic success and athletic excellence as we transition to NCAA Division I will be a core focus for our department.”

Wicker-McCree is a graduate of Jordan High, where she played on two state championship volleyball teams. She also played basketball and ran track.

She played volleyball at George Washington University.
