An agent representing North Carolina women’s basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell confirmed that the University of South Carolina contacted her about the school’s vacant coaching job.

John Meadows of Ascent Sports Management said today that South Carolina received permission from UNC to talk with the veteran coach, who has spent 22 of her 32-year coaching career at the helm of the Tar Heels.

Hatchell, who led the Heels to the New Orleans Regional of the NCAA women's tournament, met with South Carolina athletic department officials on Thursday, Meadows said. He said they reached out to her and she listened.

“She’s just interested in what they have to say,” Meadows said, declining to go into details about the meetings.

Attempts to reach Hatchell for comment were unsuccessful. Meadows said it was inappropriate for the coach to talk at this time.

A South Carolina spokesperson said the university does not comment about ongoing coaching searches. The Gamecocks’ head women’s job opened on April 14 after coach Susan Walvius resigned.

North Carolina athletic director Dick Baddour said he could not talk about South Carolina’s intentions but added that it is his desire to see coach Hatchell continue to lead the UNC program.

“Absolutely,” he said in a phone interview. “She built this program, she’s led it for over 20 years. It’s got her mark on it. ... We very much want her to continue to be here.”

Meadows said since the season ended, no other university has contacted Hatchell about available coaching jobs. Meadows said that Hatchell’s current base salary at UNC is $260,000.
