Holtz, 14 others elected into Hall

Former Wolfpack coach honored

Former N.C. State and Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz is among 15 former players and coaches elected Thursday to the College Football Hall of Fame.

Holtz coached six schools, including N.C. State, to 249 wins in a career that spanned more than 30 years. He won a national title with Notre Dame in 1988.

John Cooper, who went 192-84-6 with Tulsa, Arizona State and Ohio State, was the other coach selected for induction.

Also elected to the Hall of Fame were UCLA quarterback Troy Aikman; LSU tailback Billy Cannon; Virginia offensive tackle Jim Dombrowski; Northwestern linebacker Pat Fitzgerald; Florida linebacker Wilber Marshall; Washington State running back Ruben Mayes; Arizona State guard Randall McDaniel; Syracuse quarterback Don McPherson; Wyoming tight end Jay Novacek; Texas Tech split end Dave Parks; Florida State nose guard Ron Simmons; Oklahoma State running back Thurman Thomas; and Army quarterback Arnold Tucker.

BUTKUS AWARD: The Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, which hands out the Butkus Award to the top college linebacker, will stop presenting it after a legal battle with Dick Butkus. Butkus' family will begin presenting the award in January 2009 in Chicago.

IU PLAYER PLANS TO QUIT, HAS FIT: Indiana freshman center Eli Holman told coaches Thursday he intended to transfer before apparently throwing a tantrum in their office that required a call to the campus police.

The meeting, which coach Tom Crean described as cordial initially, certainly did not end that way. "His behavior took me, along with the other people in the office, by surprise," Crean said.
