Indiana University told the NCAA on Monday that its own self-imposed penalties should be enough to keep the organization from having to punish the school for improper phone calls made by Kelvin Sampson before he resigned as basketball coach.

Sampson said he had been judged before he had a chance to present his side to the NCAA.

The Hoosiers still face a hearing in front of the NCAA's infractions committee. Sampson resigned late last season, and new coach Tom Crean inherited a one-year extension of recruiting restrictions on phone calls and the loss of one scholarship for the 2008-09 season.

Indiana also limited Crean to 10 off-campus recruiting days before July 31.

"In light of the fact that the University had decided to impose significant sanctions that more than compensated for the number of impermissible phone calls and any recruiting advantage that may have been gained, Indiana University determined these calls did not warrant the imposition of additional penalties," the school said in a 750-page response to the NCAA.

GOALTENDING RULE CHANGE: An NCAA committee has recommended changing the goaltending rule so that a ball that is completely above the rim and has already hit the backboard could not be touched, regardless of whether it is on an upward or downward flight.

The proposal was one of about 50 by a joint subcommittee of the men's and women's rules committee. Only a handful of minor changes were approved, and those must be approved next month by the NCAA's playing rules oversight panel before they would go into effect.

Among the proposals that were approved was one requiring home teams to wear light uniforms and visiting teams to wear dark uniforms, unless both schools agree to a switch. Previously, the light-home, dark-visitor uniforms were recommended, but not required.

MAYO'S AGENCY DENIES ILLEGAL ACTIVITY: The sports agency representing O.J. Mayo denied any illegal activity involving the Southern California star on Monday, a day after ESPN reported Bill Duffy Associates gave cash to an event promoter who provided gifts.

Mayo has declared for the NBA Draft and hired BDA Sports' Calvin Andrews as his agent. ESPN's "Outside the Lines" reported Sunday that Mayo received about $30,000 and other benefits while in high school and during his lone season at USC.

FOOTBALL

GATORS PLAYER SHOT: Florida football player Matt Patchan is recovering after being shot in the shoulder while at a Tampa, Fla., area-park.

Florida coach Urban Meyer says Patchan, a Gators defensive lineman, is expected to fully recover. Patchan was shot Friday night. Details of the shooting are not yet known.

BASEBALL

ACC HONORS: North Carolina's Dustin Ackley and Rob Wooten claimed this week's honors as player and pitcher of the week, respectively.

North Carolina became just the third school to make a complete sweep of both accolades outright since the league handed out separate weekly awards in 2003.

Ackley hit .526 with six RBIs as No. 2 North Carolina went 4-1 on the week.

Wooten made four appearances and combined for seven shutout innings for the Tar Heels last week, striking out 11.

TROJANS TO HOST REGIONAL: Mount Olive (49-5) was ranked No. 1 in the final regular-season poll for NCAA Division II.

The Trojans also were named as host for the South Atlantic Regional, a six-team double-elimination tournament that will begin on Thursday.

Mount Olive faces Erskine on Thursday at 7 p.m. Other teams in the tournament are USC-Aiken, North Georgia, Columbus State and Belmont Abbey.
