Cardinal Gibbons and Ravenscroft each won a state boys golf championship on Tuesday.
Ravenscroft, the N.C. Independent School Athletic Association 3-A winner, was led by medalist Zak Dearinger, who shot a par 72 for a two-day 148 at Bryan Park in Greensboro.
Gibbons won the N.C. High School Athletic 2-A championship as Ryan Lavelle shot a 2-under-par 140 at the Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines to claim the individual title.
RAVENS REPEAT: Ravenscroft, the 2007 NCISAA 3-A champ, shot a second-day 299 to take a five-stroke victory over Forsyth Country Day, 608-613. North Raleigh Christian was a distant third at 644.
Dearinger, a sophomore, nipped freshman teammate Reeves Zaytoun 148-149 for the individual title.
The team title is the Ravens' third in the past four years and its sixth in school history.
"We are thrilled to win the title for the second-straight year," coach Jimmy Cox said in a news release. "Forsyth Country Day made a good run early today and at one point, cut the lead to one stroke. But then Zak came out for us and posted a 72 to help us pull away."
GIBBONS WINS SQUEAKER: Gibbons nipped 2007 champion Ledford 597-598 for the NCHSAA 2-A crown. The Crusaders had been the state runners-up the past two years.
"On a personal note, it's made my decade. ... It might be my life," Gibbons coach Robert Guzzo said news release. "They say the third time's the charm. We finally pushed through here -- by one shot."
Lavelle was the only golfer to break par in the 2-A tournament.
He bogeyed No. 10 (his first hole) before finishing the back nine at 33 with birdies on Nos. 14, 15 and 18. He added birdies on Nos. 3 and 7, too.
"It was never about winning individually. It was about putting up the best score to help our team win," Lavelle said in the release. "It's more fun to share this victory with five guys.
"I told myself, 'If I can hang in there, I can make some good shots and get it back together.' After those first four or five holes, I turned it on."
FIKE WINS 3-A: Wilson Fike won the NCHSAA 3-A team title by six strokes over Gastonia Forestview, 609-615, at the Fox Fire Resort and Country Club.
Fike's Zach Gliarmis finished fourth (76-74--150).
WELDEN RECLAIMS TITLE: John Welden of East Surry won his second consecutive state individual 1-A title at the Keith Hills Country Club in Buies Creek.
East Surry topped Hampstead Topsail 610-617 for the team title.
Welden had a 73 in the final round to go with a 71 on Monday for a par 144 total.
