Beard leads Mystics to victory

Alana Beard hit two free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining as the Washington Mystics won their WNBA home opener with a 69-66 victory over the Houston Comets on Sunday.

Coco Miller's steal and layup with 22 seconds left gave Washington (1-2) the lead at 67-66.

Beard, the former Duke Star, led the Mystics with 16 points, and Miller scored 10 off the bench. Reserve Laurie Koehn added 12 points on four 3-pointers.

Tina Thompson led Houston (0-2) with 17 points.
