Derrick Owens, whose teams won three state high school championships in Michigan, is the new boys basketball coach at Northern Durham High School.
Owens was an assistant coach to Northern's Matt Hunt during the 2007-08 season. Hunt resigned for personal reasons after the season.
"I want to continue many of the things that Coach Hunt started," Owens said. "Everybody knows that players can make plays. My role as a coach is to make sure the players learn the lessons they need to learn to be successful in life."
Owens said the accomplishment he is most proud of is sending 30 players to play college basketball.
"Every one of them graduated," said the Detroit native, who relocated in the area last fall to move to a warmer climate.
He has 31 years of coaching experience. At Detroit St. Martin de Porres, his alma mater, his teams won three Michigan state titles during his seven years as head coach. Among his high school and college jobs, he was an assistant at Eastern Michigan University for a year and was head coach at Detroit Southwestern High for five years.
