Duke women’s basketball coach Joanne P. McCallie announced in a statement today that redshirt junior guard Brittany Mitch has been granted a release from team.

Mitch, of McLean, Va., will remain at Duke in the fall and is expected to graduate in December with a degree in biological anthropology and anatomy.

The 6-foot-2 rising junior, who last season played in 23 contest and averaged 2.0 points and 1.0 assists, has two years of playing eligibility remaining and is likely to pursue basketball as a graduate student.

As a freshman, Mitch played in 33 of 34 games, averaging 3.3 points and 1.9 rebounds. Mitch sat out the 2005-06 season to recover from a hip injury.

“I enjoyed coaching Brittany this season, but understand and support her decision,” McCallie said in a statement. “We wish Brittany and her family all the best in the future.”
