Guard Jordan Crawford has quit the Indiana basketball team, leaving the Hoosiers facing possible NCAA sanctions with just two players returning from last season.

The 6-foot-4 Crawford started eight games as a freshman for the Hoosiers, whose roster has been depleted with transfers, dismissals and the departure of Eric Gordon for the NBA since former coach Kelvin Sampson stepped down this spring.

Sampson, new coach Tom Crean and other Indiana officials are scheduled to appear at an NCAA infractions committee hearing in Seattle on Friday.

The case against Sampson was detailed in a 96-page report sent to the university in May and made public last week. The NCAA accuses Sampson of providing false and misleading information to investigators about more than 100 impermissible calls and knowingly violating NCAA recruiting restrictions imposed because of a previous phone-call scandal at Oklahoma.

DUKE GRANTS RELEASE TO MITCH: Duke has granted sophomore reserve Brittany Mitch a release that will eventually allow her to continue her basketball career elsewhere.

The school said Wednesday that Mitch will remain at Duke in the fall and expects to graduate in December with a degree in biological anthropology and anatomy. She would pursue graduate studies at another school with two years of eligibility remaining.

Mitch played in 59 games for the Blue Devils in two seasons, averaging about three points and two rebounds. She redshirted the 2005-06 season due to a right hip injury.

FORMER WVU COACH HAS HEART SURGERY: Former West Virginia football coach Don Nehlen was recuperating Wednesday, a day after having triple heart bypass surgery.

Nehlen's son-in-law, former NFL quarterback Jeff Hostetler, said Nehlen underwent surgery Tuesday following routine testing and that his recovery was going well.

Nehlen, 72, is West Virginia's winningest football coach with a 149-93-4 record in 21 seasons. He retired after the 2000 season and was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2005.

ECU SEASON TICKETS GOING FAST: For the second consecutive year, East Carolina is on a record-breaking sales pace that likely will result in another sellout of its football season-ticket allotment. With approximately 19,500 season tickets already ordered, ECU now has less than 2,500 season tickets available with more than two months remaining before the Pirates' opener against Virginia Tech at Charlotte on Aug. 30.

CAMELS NAME ASSISTANT COACH: Nathan Leggett has been named assistant coach at Campbell, first-year head coach Leigh Mullins announced.
