With the deadline looming to opt out of the final year of his contract, Shawn Marion and the Miami Heat plan to resume negotiations this weekend on a possible extension.

And that's just one issue Heat president Pat Riley is juggling as the team prepares for a hectic few days leading to the NBA Draft.

Marion, a four-time All-Star, must notify the Heat and league by Tuesday whether he would opt out of the $17.8 million he's set to earn next season. If Marion opts out, the 30-year-old forward would become a free agent July 1 and could sign with any team, including Miami, when the league's moratorium expires July 9.

Marion is believed to be seeking at least a three-year deal with an average salary between $13 and $15 million a season. The Heat likely would prefer Marion to opt out and agree to a new contract for about $10 million a season.

"I want to be clear on this: No decision has been made," Marion's agent Dan Fegan said Friday. "I'm hopeful to have another round of conversations with Pat over the weekend. Hopefully, we can work to come to some resolution."

NBA WANTS $1.4 MILLION FROM DONAGHY: The NBA wants disgraced referee Tim Donaghy to pay the league $1.4 million, including his wages for games on which he bet or provided inside tips to gamblers.

The written demand, filed Thursday in federal court, asks a judge to force Donaghy to pay it as restitution in his gambling case.

The Donaghy scandal "has harmed the NBA and caused it to spend vast sums to undo that harm," league lawyers wrote.

In an earlier filing, defense attorney John Lauro accused the NBA of trying to extract the money to punish Donaghy for embarrassing the league with allegations of widespread misconduct by executives and employees.

SUNS' STAFF: The Phoenix Suns hired Alvin Gentry, Bill Cartwright, Dan Majerle and Igor Kokoskov as assistant coaches to Terry Porter.

KNICKS FILL OUT STAFF: The New York Knicks added three assistants to coach Mike D'Antoni's staff Friday, retaining Herb Williams from Isiah Thomas' crew and signing former Suns assistants Phil Weber and Dan D'Antoni, Mike's older brother.

BOBCATS WORKOUT: The number of prospects the Charlotte Bobcats have brought in ahead of next week's NBA Draft has reached 39.

Guards Bryce Taylor of Oregon, Marcelus Kemp of Nevada, Sundiata Gaines of Georgia and Bo McCalebb of New Orleans auditioned on Friday.

ARIZA TO STAY WITH LAKERS: Forward Trevor Ariza, acquired in a November trade with Orlando, has exercised his player contract option to remain with the Los Angeles Lakers.
