Local athletes to watch at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials, which will run today through July 6 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

BERSHAWN JACKSON

Owns the second-fastest 400-meter hurdles time (48.15) in the world this year. A graduate of St. Augustine's College, he trains with former U.S. Olympic track and field coach George Williams. A U.S. and world outdoor champion, he is trying to make his first Olympic squad.

SHANNON ROWBURY

After suffering an injury last season, she has returned to the 1,500 meters event in top form. In May at the Adidas Track Classic, the 2007 Duke graduate won in 4 minutes, 1.06 seconds, claiming the fourth-fastest 1,500 time in the world this season and fifth-best American time in history. She also won the 2008 U.S. Indoor 3,000-meter title.

JOE KINDRED

A Fuquay-Varina High School graduate who is a rising senior at St. Augustine's College. The high jumper won the 2008 indoor and outdoor NCAA Division II national championships.

MICHELLE LEWIS

A graduate of South Carolina, she lives and trains in Cary. She will compete in the 100 and 200 meters. She was a member of the U.S. 4x100 relay team that won a gold medal at the 2007 World Outdoor Championships.

JAMAAL TORRANCE

St. Augustine's College graduate competes in the 400 meters. He finished sixth at the 2007 USA Outdoor Championship and seventh at the Pan Am Games.
