The Hurricanes made a huge trade and re-signed four players in a 58-minute span Tuesday, the first day of the NHL's free-agent period. Here are their moves:

* Traded forward Erik Cole to the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman Joni Pitkanen. Cole ranked among the franchise's top seven in games played (418), points (280), goals (129) and assists (151) since the team moved to North Carolina in 1997. Pitkanen, 24, was the fourth overall pick in the 2002 draft. He has 142 points in four NHL seasons with the Oilers and Philadelphia Flyers.

* Re-signed defenseman Anton Babchuk to a one-year contract worth $1 million. Babchuk spent last season in Russia but played for the Hurricanes in 2005-06 and 2006-07.

* Re-signed forward/defenseman Tim Conboy to a two-year contract worth $975,000.

* Re-signed forward/defenseman Wade Brookbank to a one-year contract worth $475,000.

* Re-signed forward Ryan Bayda to a one-year contract worth $475,000.
