EUGENE, ORE. - Broughton High graduate Jesse Williams had his timing just right, and now he's going to the Olympic games in Beijing.

Williams, 24, won his first U.S. Track and Field title Saturday, and he did it when it counted most, at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials at Hayward Field.

Williams winning leap of 7-feet- 6 1/2 inches earned him the gold medal, and a berth for next month's Beijing Games.

Williams, who was an NCAA All-America at both N.C. State and Southern California missed three times at 7-8 3/4, which would have been a trials record, after he had already won the competition. Williams' personal best is 7-7 3/4 (2007).

"Honestly, I had a little feeling before the meet," he said. "I won four NCAA titles when I was at USC. I had that exact same feeling before I won those titles. I just felt like I knew I was going to win the meet, and I executed everything as planned."
