Chad LaTourette, a 19-year-old from Mission Viejo, Calif., blew away the field at the U.S. Open swim meet in Minneapolis with a blazing time of 7 minutes, 48.30 seconds in the 800-meter freestyle. LaTourette shaved nearly a half-second off the mark set earlier this year by Tunisia's Ous Mellouli at the Janet Evans Invitational in Los Angeles.
Taking three individual titles during the meet was Kelsey Ditto. The 19-year-old from Austin, Texas, rallied in a dramatic final lap to edge Emily Brunemann in the 1,500 freestyle. Ditto earlier won the 400 freestyle, the 800 freestyle and was part of the winning 800 freestyle relay team to complete what she said was her best perfomance in a single meet.
Kirsten Smith of the Marlins Of Raleigh finished sixth in the 200 individual medley in 2:17.10.
