Point guard Marques Johnson has decided to transfer from the N.C. State basketball team, the school announced Wednesday.

"Marques felt it would be in his best interest to take advantage of an opportunity somewhere else," coach Sidney Lowe said in a statement. "He definitely has handled himself with as much class as anybody that I've been around since he has been at N.C. State."

Johnson transferred to N.C. State from Tennessee in the spring of 2007.

He averaged 2.0 points and 1.2 assists in 21 games last season, making six starts.

He would have faced intense competition for playing time this season with Farnold Degand returning from knee surgery, Javier Gonzalez back for his sophomore season and Julius Mays joining the team as a freshman.

DUKE'S HARRIS BACK AT PRACTICE: Duke's Clifford Harris, who missed Tuesday's scrimmage with a leg injury, was back on the practice field Wednesday morning.

The senior running back, slated to step in for injured Re'quan Boyette, participated in the light workout.

ECU'S LINDSAY, SETZER OUT: East Carolina football coach Skip Holtz announced that projected starting running back Dominique Lindsay and senior defensive tackle Brandon Setzer are both facing knee surgery. Lindsay, who suffered his injury Tuesday night, will be out an unspecified amount of time while Setzer is lost for the entire season.

BLUMENHERST NAMED TO WORLD AMATEUR TEAM: Coming off her victory Sunday in the U.S. Women's Amateur, Duke senior Amanda Blumenherst has been selected by the U.S. Golf Association to represent the U.S. at the Women's World Amateur Team Championship, which will be played Oct. 8-11 at the Grange Golf Club's East and West Courses in Adelaide, Australia.
