St. Augustine's to hold first scrimmage today

Saint Augustine's will hold its first football intrasquad scrimmage today at Emery Field on campus. The scrimmage starts at 10 a.m.

The intrasquad scrimmage is the first of two for the Falcons during the preseason. The second scrimmage is scheduled for Aug. 23 at Emery Field on Meet the Falcons/Media Day. The starting time is 1 p.m.

COLUMBIA OFFICERS CHARGED: Two Columbia, S.C., police officers face charges of misconduct in office after they were accused of using excessive force when arresting a University of South Carolina football player this spring.

The State newspaper said in a story on its Web site Friday that Roger Gilland and David Beddingfield Jr. were indicted this week. The charges stem from their arrest of Gamecocks offensive lineman Kevin Young on March 2.

FSU'S WHITE RETURNS: Florida State defensive end Markus White returned to practice Friday, a day after suffering a seizure and missing practice. FSU officials said White takes medication to control an undisclosed medical condition and that Thursday was not the first time he had a seizure.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

FOUR UNC PLAYERS IN NATIONAL POOL: Four North Carolina players have earned spots in the U.S. Women's National Team player pool, U.S. Lacrosse announced earlier this month.

Returning players Kristen Carr, Amber Falcone and Jenn Russell were named to the pool, as was graduated 2008 senior Erica LaGrow.

The announcement came after three days of tryouts concluded at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.

The player pool will be divided into Elite and Developmental teams following US Lacrosse's Stars and Stripes weekend Oct. 10-13. All players are eligible to represent Team USA at the 2009 IFWLA World Cup in Prague, Czech Republic, with the final 18-player roster expected to be announced following the US Lacrosse Champions Challenge in Jan. 2009.

BASKETBALL

WAKE NAMES REYNOLDS: Wake Forest has announced the hiring of Ryan Reynolds to serve on the men's basketball staff as the assistant coordinator of operations.

Reynolds comes to Winston-Salem after spending the last five years at Xavier.
