N.C. State fans probably will know the identity of the Wolfpack's starting quarterback in time to pray for Daniel Evans, Russell Wilson or Mike Glennon at church services on Sunday.

But coach Tom O'Brien might not tip his hand until late this week. He canceled a meeting with reporters that was set for after the final preseason scrimmage on Tuesday.

A spokesman said the scrimmage was scheduled to end late in the evening, so O'Brien planned to discuss details during a 2 p.m. news conference today, one scheduled long ago to preview the Aug. 28 opener at South Carolina.

During his media day news conference on Sunday, O'Brien said he hopes to arrive at a decision on a quarterback starter by today.

But assistant sports information director Pat Norris said O'Brien doesn't plan to release a depth chart until Friday or Saturday.

That's when the sports information staff will exchange depth charts with South Carolina, and O'Brien might not want to give coach Steve Spurrier extra time before that to prepare.

O'Brien whittled a five-player race down to three before the second scrimmage, eliminating sophomore Justin Burke and junior Harrison Beck. After learning he wasn't among the favorites in the race for a starter, Burke decided to transfer to Louisville.

Incumbent starter Evans, redshirt freshman Wilson and freshman Glennon are the remaining candidates.

"Coach knows what he's doing," Wilson said last week. "Everybody trusts Coach O'Brien. He knows what he's doing. Whatever his decision is, we're going to be ready for it and move on."

O'Brien even declined to provide the passing statistics from N.C. State's third scrimmage, saying he wanted to keep details private as the quarterback race approached its conclusion.
