The Carolina Hurricanes' ninth annual Caniac Carnival season kickoff event will take place 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 21 at the RBC Center.

Parking and admission will be free. The event will include rides, interactive games, a TNT Freestyle Motocross show, live music and an autograph session with Hurricanes players.

Starting at 10 a.m. and while supplies last, fans can receive complimentary tickets to the 3 p.m. Red-White intrasquad scrimmage.

Along with the tickets, 1,500 wristbands will be distributed for the autograph session, which will take place from 12:15 until 1:30. Fans may arrive as early as 8 a.m. to line up on the East and West sides of the RBC Center for tickets and autograph wristbands.

STARS' BARNES RETIRES: Dallas Stars center Stu Barnes is retiring after 16 seasons in the NHL.

The Stars said Thursday that Barnes, 37, has agreed to a two-year contract to join Dave Tippett's coaching staff as an assistant.

The Stars also announced two-year contract extensions for associate coach Rick Wilson and assistant coach Mark Lamb to take them through the 2010-11 season.

Barnes had 261 goals and 336 assists for 597 points in his 1,136-game NHL career. He played 329 of those games with the Stars. He also played in 116 Stanley Cup playoff games in 12 postseasons.

Barnes was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in 1989 and also played with the Florida Panthers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres before being traded to the Stars in March 2003.

KINGS SIGN FIRST-ROUND PICK: Colten Teubert, an 18-year-old defenseman who was the 13th pick in this year's draft, agreed to a three-year, entry-level contract with the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday. Terms were not disclosed.
