Wake Forest-Rolesville has named former football and basketball standout Reggie Lucas as its head boys varsity basketball coach.
Lucas succeeds Chuck Hess, who has retired.
"I am honored and excited to have this opportunity," Lucas said. "This is a dream come true for me."
Lucas played for famed WF-R boys basketball coach Larry Lindsay and helped lead the Cougars into the regional playoffs as a junior and senior. He also started at quarterback on the football team.
He played cornerback at Lenoir-Rhyne and returned to Wake Forest to become a teacher.
He coached football, basketball and track at Wake Forest-Rolesville Middle before moving to the high school in 2001 as a football assistant for current Cougar coach Earl Smith.
He is WF-R's head track coach and the defensive coordinator for the Cougars' football team.
"I have worked with him on the football staff for several years and I know of no better young coach," said coaching veteran Don Murry, who has been named as athletic director.
"He is as good a coach as I have ever worked with. He demands respect, and he demands perfection. He has a tremendous rapport with the kids."
Murry is a former head football coach at Oxford Webb and Asheboro and coached with Ed Emory at East Carolina.
He has been a football assistant coach at Wake Forest since 2001.
