N.C. State backup tight end Matt Kushner is out for the season with a knee injury, the school announced Thursday evening.

Kushner injured his right knee late in the second quarter last week against William & Mary.

As announced previously, starting tight end Anthony Hill will miss his second straight game with a muscle pull in his chest Saturday when the Wolfpack plays at Clemson.

Redshirt freshman George Bryan, who started the season as a third-teamer, will start at tight end. Walk-on Eric Weaver will back him up, and coach Tom O'Brien said he might move an offensive lineman to that position if he needs a third tight end in a goal-line situation.

WELLS DOUBTFUL: Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said Thursday it is doubtful that starting tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells will play Saturday night against No. 1 Southern California.

Tressel said Wells had lingering soreness in his right foot after he worked out on Wednesday night.

ECU HIRES CASE: Reed Case has been hired as director of football administration at East Carolina.

Case served as the coordinator of football operations at Oklahoma State from August 2007 to May 2008, handling day-to-day operations of the football recruiting department.

CAMELS CHOOSE ASSISTANT: Michael Slonaker has been appointed assistant men's basketball coach at Campbell.

Slonaker served as assistant coach at Shorter College last season.
