East Carolina is being fined $10,000 by Conference USA because fans rushed the football field after East Carolina's upset victory over West Virginia last weekend.
The conference said Friday the school violated a policy that prohibits public access to competition areas until the visiting team and officials are in the locker rooms.
Conference USA said the university also is subject to a possible suspension of future hosting privileges. Athletic director Terry Holland said in a statement that the school will refocus on winning games.
The State Bureau of Investigation will look into reports that some police officers used excessive force on fans went onto the field, school officials said Friday.
MISCELLANEOUSWAKE TO INDUCT SIX: Five Wake Forest graduates and a former head coach will be inducted into the Wake Forest University Sports Hall of Fame on Sept. 27.
The induction class includes former basketball stars Randolph Childress ('95) and Tim Duncan ('97), Olympic triathlete Hunter Kemper ('98), former Deacon golfer Len Mattiace ('90), ex-New York Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi ('63) and former basketball coach Dave Odom.
The class will be inducted into the Hall of Fame during halftime of the Wake Forest football game against Navy on Sept. 27.

MEN'S SOCCERNORTH CAROLINA 2, N.C. STATE 1 (OT): Garry Lewis headed in a Michael Callahan cross two minutes into overtime to lift North Carolina (4-0-1, 1-0 ACC) past visiting N.C. State (0-3-1, 0-1).
The Wolfpack took a 1-0 lead on a first-half goal by Walt Williams. UNC knotted it at 1-1 when Chris Lebo scored in the 66th minute.
DUKE 3, VIRGINIA TECH 1: Senior Mike Grella scored a pair of second-half goals to lead visiting Duke (3-2, 1-0 ACC) past No. 22 Virginia Tech (2-2-1, 0-1).
CROSS COUNTRYPACK RUNNERS PERFECT: Host N.C. State posted perfect scores of 15 to win the Wolfpack Invite at Wake Med Soccer Park.
In the men's race, N.C. State's Fredy Torres was credited with the victory, although a group of four runners came across the finish line with identical times in the 5K race of 15:21.
East Carolina was second with a team score of 64.
In the women's race, unattached NCSU junior Kara McKenna won by nine seconds over Pack freshman Lauren Bishop, finishing the 5K course in 18:07.
