College notes: Tar Heels, Hokies kick off on ABC

North Carolina will open its ACC season next Saturday against Virginia Tech at 3:30 p.m. on ABC (WTVD, WCTI), the school announced on Saturday.

The Tar Heels are 2-0 after wins over McNeese State and Rutgers.

Virginia Tech is 2-1 overall, with the loss in its season-opener against East Carolina, but won its ACC opener on Saturday against Georgia Tech.

SATURDAY'S RESULTS

FIELD HOCKEY

WAKE FOREST 4, DUKE 1: Kim Romansky scored a pair of second-half goals to lift No. 2 Wake Forest (5-0, 1-0 ACC) past No. 6 Duke (3-2, 0-1) at Winston-Salem.

MEN'S SOCCER

CAMPBELL 2, GEORGIA SOUTHERN 0: Josue Soto and Kahlil Johnson scored second-half goals as the host Camels (2-2) topped Georgia Southern (1-2).

VOLLEYBALL

WAKE FOREST 3, ECU: Freshman Kadija Fornah had eight kills as the host Deacons (5-3) swept ECU (8-3) 25-15, 25-11, 25-15.

FLORIDA GULF COAST 3, CAMPBELL 0: Ana Kokanovic had 18 kills and four blocks to help Florida Gulf Coast (3-5, 2-0 A-Sun) down visiting Campbell (2-8, 1-1) 25-17, 25-12, 25-16.

N.C. STATE 3, WESTERN CAROLINA 1: Three Pack players had 10 or more kills as N.C. State downed visiting WCU (0-8) 14-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-19.

UNC-ASHEVILLE 3, N.C. STATE 2: UNCA (5-4) outlasted the host Pack (4-8), winning 25-19, 17-25, 20-25, 26-24, 15-12.

MEN'S GOLF

CARPET CAPITAL COLLEGIATE: Dustin Groves shot his second consecutive 71 to tie for sixth place individually and help Wake Forest position itself in eighth place after the second day of the event at Rocky Face, Ga.

Chattanooga led the three-day event with a 5-under-par total of 574, followed by East Tennessee State (577) and Clemson (578).

Wake was at 10-over 586, and North Carolina was tied for 12th in the 18-team field at 15-over 591.

LATE FRIDAY

WOMEN'S SOCCER

STANFORD 1, NORTH CAROLINA 1 (2 OT): No. 3 Stanford (5-0-1) and No. 5 North Carolina (4-1-1) battled to a tie in the second match of the Stanford Invitational at Stanford, Calif.
