Alex Ovechkin had two goals and an assist, and Jose Theodore stopped 19 shots to lead the Washington Capitals to a 4-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night in the NHL season-opener.
Brooks Laich added two goals and an assist, Nicklas Backstrom had three assists, and Alexander Semin had two for Washington, which had not won in Boston in regulation in 14 tries since 2000.
The Capitals led 2-0 after Ovechkin's goal in the second, when he took a drop pass from Semin and wristed it past Tim Thomas. Washington put the game away with two goals in the first 1:57 of the third period, when Laich scored on a power play before Ovechkin made it 4-0.

Canadiens 4, Maple Leafs 3 (OT): Montreal defenseman Josh Gorges scored with 12.8 seconds left on the overtime clock, and Carey Price made 43 saves in the Canadiens' season-opening victory over Toronto.

Shanahan, Devils part unexpectedly: Veteran forward Brendan Shanahan, 40, left the New Jersey Devils on Thursday after being told Wednesday that he would not be a part of their top three lines.
Crosby among last to switch: Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby plans to use a one-piece synthetic hockey stick for the first time during the season-opener tonight against the New York Rangers. Previously, Crosby used a two-piece stick that consisted of a wooden blade attached to a synthetic shaft.
