Florida State coach Bobby Bowden is so impressed with the job being done by Jim Grobe, his counterpart at Wake Forest, that he was moved to song Sunday.
Grobe and his 16th-ranked Demon Deacons, once among the ACC's doormats, made it three straight wins over Bowden's Seminoles with a 12-3 victory Saturday night in Tallahassee. The loss knocked Florida State, which had been No. 24, out of the top 25.
"I'm amazed," Bowden said.
He said what Grobe has done reminded him of "Bobby B," a song written about Bowden years ago after he had turned around Florida State's once moribund program in part by regularly beating archrival Florida.
Bowden recited the lyrics: "The Gators used to laugh and clown when Florida State would come to town, but they quit laughin' thanks to Bobby B."
"You could say the same thing about Wake Forest," Bowden said. "The ACC used to laugh and clown when Wake Forest came to town, but they quit laughin' thanks to Jimmy G."
The Seminoles (2-1, 0-1 ACC) weren't laughing after Wake (3-0, 1-0) won a ragtag game that included seven Florida State turnovers and two by the Demon Deacons.
Florida State also committed 12 penalties for 139 yards while Wake was flagged eight times for 70 yards. A holding penalty erased an apparent Deacon touchdown and a fumble at Florida State's 2-yard line may have cost Wake another.
"We won and that's what I told our guys," Grobe said. "We don't care whether it's 3-0 or 49-48. We won."
The Seminoles played two sophomore quarterbacks, Christian Ponder and D'Vonrey Richardson, who combined for only 118 yards passing but threw five interceptions.
Drew Weatherford remained on the bench because of worries the less mobile senior would have been unable to avoid Wake's pass rush, Bowden said.
"We'll study the film," Bowden said. "If we see anything that makes us think we ought to change we've got to see it."
Bowden said he sees some of himself in Grobe.
"Nobody's ever done it down there like he has," Bowden said. "And the he stays there. He's been offered jobs all over the country, but he won't leave."
Bowden recalled he also stayed at Florida State, turning aside offers in his earlier years from more established college programs and the pros.
"I told him we recommend you for jobs and you won't take none of 'em," Bowden said with chuckle. "He's happy there and that's what counts."
MORE FOOTBALLGOLIC'S SON ARRESTED IN SOUTH BEND: Notre Dame tight end Will Yeatman and center Mike Golic Jr., son of an ESPN television host, were among 41 people arrested on misdemeanor alcohol charges early Sunday at a South Bend, Ind., home, police said.
Yeatman, 20, and Golic, 18, were charged with being minors consuming alcohol, said Sgt. Al Taylor of the Indiana State Excise Police. Others arrested included members of the Notre Dame lacrosse and soccer teams, he said.
State, excise and St. Joseph County police made the arrests at a home in South Bend about 2 a.m., Taylor said.
The charge could be more serious for Yeatman, who was arrested in January on a charge of driving drunk on a campus sidewalk.
Prosecutors agreed in February to dismiss a criminal recklessness charge and allowed Yeatman to plead guilty to drunken driving and reckless driving. The agreement called for the state to move that the drunken driving charge be dismissed if Yeatman stayed out of trouble for a year.
A message seeking comment was left by The Associated Press for Yeatman on his cell phone and at Golic's home in West Hartford, Conn.
Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis was not asked about the arrests during his weekly news conference Sunday afternoon, but he released a statement Sunday night saying he was "made aware of the situation late this afternoon and am currently looking into the matter."
