Furman can't solve Elon's Riddle

QB throws for three touchdowns

Scott Riddle threw three touchdown passes and Brandon Newsome scored twice to spark host Elon to a 31-10 football victory over Furman on Saturday.

Riddle was 21-of-30 passing for 160 yards, and Newsome rushed for 161 yards on 25 carries for the Phoenix (5-1, 3-0 Southern Conference), which never trailed.

Jordan Sorrells was 26-of-43 for 248 yards and one touchdown for Furman (4-2, 1-1).

Riddle threw second-quarter touchdown passes of 12 yards to A.J. Harris and 28 yards to Terrell Hudgins to give Elon a 17-3 halftime lead. Riddle also hit Newsome for a 1-yard touchdown and a 24-3 lead with 2:19 left in the third quarter.

Sorrells threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Chris Truss to cut the lead to 24-10 with 8:16 left before Newsome scored on a 9-yard run with 2:17 remaining.

ALSO SATURDAY

SAMFORD 21, WESTERN CAROLINA 6: Dustin Taliaferro threw two touchdown passes, and Chris Evans ran for 166 yards and a score to lead the Bulldogs over the host Catamounts at Cullowhee.

Taliaferro, who was 14-of-16 for 154 yards, connected with Jonathan Lowery on a 22-yard touchdown to give the Bulldogs (3-2) a 14-6 lead with 6:50 left in the third quarter. Taliaferro added a 38-yard TD pass to Riley Hawkins.

Zach Jaynes completed 20 of 33 passes for 162 yards and one interception for the Catamounts (2-4). Donald James caught eight passes for 82 yards, and Quan Warley ran for 47 yards on 16 carries.

MOREHEAD STATE 26, DAVIDSON 13: Mason Webb tied a Morehead State record with four field goals as the host Eagles defeated the Wildcats at Morehead, Ky.

Webb hit field goals of 20, 31, 19 and 22 yards to tie the record set by Joey Herbst, who hit four fields against Davidson in 2002.

Morehead State's Evan Sawyer was 16-of-26 passing for 210 yards and two touchdowns.

The Eagles (3-2, 1-0 Pioneer Football League) led 23-7 after Sawyer hit Brendan McLaughlin for a 30-yard touchdown on the final play of the first half.

Davidson (2-2, 1-1) got two TD passes from Ryan Alexander -- a 24-yarder to Kenny Mantuo and a 4-yarder to Kirk Benedict. Alexander was 27-of-53 for 253 yards and three interceptions.

CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 13, GARDNER-WEBB 10: John Paglia hit a 26-yard field with 1 second remaining to lift the Buccaneers (2-3, 1-0) over the visiting Bulldogs at Charleston, S.C.

Paglia's kick was set up by Gerald Stevenson's 65-yard kickoff return after Gardner-Webb (2-3, 0-1 Big South) tied on Ryan Gates' 21-yard field goal with 1:46 left.

Tribble Reese hit Kwame Krakue on a 24-yard pass to Gardner-Webb's 11, and Reese rushed for 1 yard before Paglia's attempt.

Reese finished with 135 yards passing for Charleston Southern, which scored its TD on Alex Neal's 31-yard pass to Tim Jones with 3:01 left in the first quarter.

Gardner-Webb's Stan Doolittle was 27-for-41 for 310 yards but threw three interceptions. He threw a 5-yard TD pass to Dobson Collins with 2:07 left in the first half.
