PITTSBORO - Two Mid-State 2-A Conference rivals, who just happened to be the top two ranked 2-A soccer teams in the state, battled again Monday night, with Cardinal Gibbons using two goals by senior Daniel Montero to take a 2-0 win over Pittsboro Northwood.

Gibbons (12-2, 10-1) and the Chargers (12-2-2, 9-2-1) met in the fourth round of the state playoffs last year and could very well see each other there again this season.

Junior goalkeeper Eric Hamilton got the shutout for Gibbons.

"He's come along very well, which gives the team confidence," Crusaders coach Tim Healy said. "He got help back there from Patrick Donahue, Robert Liberatore and Derek Bartushak.

"The big thing about this win is it keeps us in the driver's seat to get the top seed in the state playoffs and play at home."
